Hostile now offers their axle boots in a choice of 2 different materials. The original black boots are made of natural rubber, are very elastic and resilient but require the use of 100% synthetic or silicone based grease as petroleum based grease will soften or swell the material. The new gray boots are made of high grade urethane and are inert to all greases allowing the use of any available grease. The gray urethane boots are not as elastic as the black rubber but offer a good option for those that have had issues of softening or swelling of the black boots. The lessened elasticity of the gray boots does not allow the use of an install tool. They are still very easy to install and both types of boots can be installed as shown in the video on this web page: http://www.hostileracingproducts.com/boots.htm

Information to help you choose your boots:

Black Rubber Boot:

-Elastic and resilient
-Very resistant to fatigue over a longer period of time
-Can be installed using a greased install tool but we recommend using the method shown in the video link above.
-Not for use with petroleum based grease
-Tested and approved greases are Team Fast Eddie grease, Lucas Oil Red & Tacky #2, Permatex Silicone formula Ultra disc brake caliper lube, Wurth silicone lubricant.

Gray Urethane Boot:

-Cut resistant
-Allows use of any grease type
-Less elastic so use of an install tool is not suggested. We recommend using the method shown in the video link above.

Tips to ensure the longest life for your axle boots:
1. Sand and round sharp edges on the face of the drive cup to prevent cuts. When a rock impacts that area, any sharp edges may allow the boot to be cut.
2. Completely grease inside of boot accordions so that they do not create friction or bind. Your boots will last longer when the accordion area is full of grease.
3. Pull small end of boot toward center of axle. This will be out past the rib on the HPI axles or the knurling of aftermarket axles. The boots function best when slightly extended rather than bunched up. The photo below shows the knurling. Be sure to pull the small end out past the knurling towards the center of the axle.
4. Please understand that axle boots are subjected to an extreme application. They are spun at a high rate of speed and backed by metal so that when a rock hits the boot it creates a pinch with great force that can and will cut any material used. These boots are made of the highest quality rubber to ensure the longest life possible for this application, but harsh and rocky conditions will greatly affect the life of your boots.
